What source file formats can HyperRESEARCH work with?

 

HyperRESEARCH supports text, audio, video, and picture source files in a variety of formats. You can code directly from original video, audio recordings, and pictures, as well as transcripts and other text materials.

 


 

Text:

  • ASCII or plain text (.txt or .text)
  • Rich text (.rtf)
  • Microsoft Word (.docx)
  • Open Office (.odt)
  • HTML (.htm or .html)

Picture:

  • GIF
  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • Windows Bitmap (.bmp)
  • PGM
  • XPM
  • XWD

Portable Document Format (PDF): (as of HyperRESEARCH 4.0.0 and above)

  • PDF (as text if the PDF contains selectable text or has been converted to text via OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
  • PDF (as image for all all PDFs)

Audio and Video source file formats supported depends upon the version of HyperRESEARCH being used. For HyperRESEARCH 4.0.3 and earlier:

 

Audio (most often used):

  • AIFF (.aiff or .aif)
  • MP3 (.mp3)
  • Windows WAVE (.wav)
  • Sun Audio (.au)
  • AAC (.m4a)
  • Windows Media Audio (.wma) - Mac OS X only

Video (most often used):

  • QuickTime video (.mov)
  • Video for Windows (.vfw)
  • AVI (.avi)
  • MPEG (.mpg and .mp4)
  • Windows Media Video (.wmv) - Mac OS X only

The above is only a partial listing of the most popular audio and video formats. HyperRESEARCH uses the QuickTime library to play audio and video, and QuickTime supports many more formats. For a complete list, visit Apple's QuickTime page or see the QuickTime technical specifications.

For HyperRESEARCH 4.5.0 and above, the following cross-platform (macOS and Windows) media formats are supported. The same formats are supported in HyperTRANSCRIBE 2.0.0 and above.

 

Audio file formats:

  • AAC Audio (iTunes, others) - acc, m4a, m4p, m4r
  • AIFF Audio - aif, aifc, aiff
  • Sun/NeXT Audio (AU) - au, snd
  • Core Audio Format (CAF) - caf
  • MP3 Audio - mp3 (This is our RECOMMENDED format for audio media)
  • WAVE Audio - wav
  • Apple Audiobook (Others) - m4b
  • Adaptive Multi-Rate Audio - amr
  • Audio Data Transport Stream - adts
  • MP2 Audio - mp2

 Video file formats:

  • QuickTime Movie - mov, qt
  • MPEG Video - mpg, mpeg
  • MPEG-2 Video - mpg, mpeg
  • MPEG-4 Video (h264 Codec) - mp4
  • MPEG-4 Video (AAC Codec) (iTunes, others) - m4v (This is our RECOMMENDED format for audio media)
  • 3GP Video Capture - 3gp, 3g3, 3gp2, 3gpp
  • Digital Camera Video (DV) - dv

Note: All but MPEG-1 under Windows requires the LAV Filters package of additional free media formats to be installed.
