NOTE: This FAQ refers to HyperTRANSCRIBE version 1.x. Please upgrade to HyperTRANSCRIBE version 2.x, which does not rely on Apple's Quicktime technology (now no longer supported by Apple and hence a security issue).

HyperTRANSCRIBE uses Apple Computer's QuickTime technology for the playback of audio or video. QuickTime does not natively support MPEG-2 as a video format.

However, Apple offers a MPEG-2 playback component for Mac OS X and Windows, which is available for purchase online at the Apple Store:

The QuickTime MPEG-2 component has some limitations. Please see the full details on the Apple web site. The MPEG-2 component supports the playback of MPEG-2 files (.mpg, .mpeg, .vob, .vro, .m2v, .m2a, and .m2s) that contain MPEG audio layers I or II. The MPEG-2 component does not support audio playback for MPEG-2 files containing PCM, DTS, or AC3 audio.

If you have MPEG-2 video content you want to transcribe, and it is not supported by the QuickTime MPEG-2 component, you can convert the video to another supported video format. A wide variety of free and low-cost tools are available for both Mac OS X and Windows to convert video from MPEG-2 to another format supported by QuickTime, such as MPEG-4.
