HyperTRANSCRIBE utilizes Apple Computer's QuickTime technology for the playback of audio or video. QuickTime, as downloaded and installed from Apple, does not natively support MPEG-2 as a video format. However, Apple does offer a MPEG-2 add-on for QuickTimefor MacOS and Windows. The Apple QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component is a commercial product and, as of the time of the FAQ, cost $19.99 USD for each platform (Mac and Win).

The Apple QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component has some limitations. Please see the full details on the Apple Web Site at the links above. The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component supports the playback of MPEG-2 files (.mpg, .mpeg, .vob, .vro, .m2v, .m2a, and .m2s) that contain MPEG audio layers I or II. The MPEG-2 Playback Component does not support audio playback for MPEG-2 files containing PCM, DTS, or AC3 audio.

If you have MPEG-2 video content you wish to transcribe and it is not supported by the Apple QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, your other option is to transcode or convert the video to another supported video format. There are a wide variety of free and low cost tools available for both Macintosh and Windows to transcode or convert video from one format, such as MPEG-2, to another format supported by QuickTime, such as MPEG-4.
