For HyperTRANSCRIBE 1.6.1 and earlier, HyperTRANSCRIBE can use audio and video files nearly any formats supported by Apple Quicktime (macOS) or Apple Quicktime for Windows (Windows). These include:
Audio file formats:
- AIFF (.aiff or .aif)
- MP3 (.mp3)
- Windows WAVE (.wav)
- Sun Audio (.au)
- AAC (.m4a)
Video file formats:
- QuickTime video (.mov)
- Video for Windows (.vfw)
- AVI (.avi)
- MPEG (.mpg and .mp4)

For HyperTRANSCRIBE 2.0.0 and higher, the following cross-platform (macOS and Windows) media formats are supported. The same formats are supported in HyperRESEARCH 4.5.0 and above.

- Core Audio Format (CAF) - caf
- MP3 Audio - mp3 (This is our RECOMMENDED format for audio media)
- WAVE Audio - wav
- Apple Audiobook (Others) - m4b
- Adaptive Multi-Rate Audio - amr
- Audio Data Transport Stream - adts
- MP2 Audio - mp2
Video file formats:
- QuickTime Movie - mov, qt
- MPEG Video - mpg, mpeg
- MPEG-2 Video - mpg, mpeg
- MPEG-4 Video (h264 Codec) - mp4
- MPEG-4 Video (AAC Codec) (iTunes, others) - m4v (This is our RECOMMENDED format for audio media)
- 3GP Video Capture - 3gp, 3g3, 3gp2, 3gpp
- Digital Camera Video (DV) - dv
Note: All but MPEG-1 under Windows requires the LAV Filters package of additional free media formats to be installed.
