If you have been using the Annotations feature in HyperRESEARCH versions older than 3.7, and you recently updated HyperRESEARCH to version 3.7 or later, you may encounter the following message when you open your study file:

Why did I get this message?

You received this message because HyperRESEARCH 3.7 does some additional integrity checking on annotations. If your study file had problem annotations, HyperRESEARCH will find and fix those problems automatically. (Note: the problems were in your study before now. Earlier versions simply didn't look for them and alert you.)

The problems might have occurred when you deleted code references or cases, or when you created two or more code references that were identical (same case, same code, and same segment of source material), or when you imported other studies in a way that resulted in having identical code references.

The symptoms included annotations that seemed to disappear (an annotation mark next to a code reference, but no annotation) and a state where the Annotation window would not allow you to enter an annotation.

HyperRESEARCH 3.7 and later looks for annotation problems when it opens a study file. If it finds annotations that don't belong to a code reference, or missing annotations, it repairs the file. Once these repairs have been made, you can continue working in the repaired study file. (It also creates a backup copy of the original, unrepaired file in case you need to consult the original.)

 

What should I do?

First, don't panic: Your study is fine.

The "HyperRESEARCH found some problems with your annotations" message includes three options:

• OK: Click this if you wish to view your repaired study in HyperRESEARCH version 3.7
• Support: Click this to go directly to our tech support contact page on our website to request technical support
• Details...: Click this to get a detailed report on any "childless" annotation marks and "orphaned" annotations found in your study file

The Details window shows details of what the study checking routine found when you opened your study in HyperRESEARCH version 3.7.

Annotations whose code references could not be found (i.e. "orphan" annotations) are listed first, with identifying details including case name, code name, source file name, the code position (identifying the specific selected material within the source file), and the content of the annotation. You may recognize these as codes and annotations that were used earlier in your study but have since been cut or deleted. HyperRESEARCH removes these extraneous annotations from your study file, as their presence can cause problems with the Annotation window.

Code references with missing annotations (i.e. "childless" annotation marks) are listed next. HyperRESEARCH 3.7 removes these extraneous annotation marks as the corresponding annotations were cut or deleted in the past.
